NARRATIVE
This presentation will provide an overview of issues that can arise during the perinatal period, from pre-conception through postpartum adjustment for the family. A psychodynamic approach, with a particular focus on attachment, as well as other theoretical perspectives will be brought in for both assessment purposes and therapeutic interventions. The impact of infertility and family building challenges on mental health and wellbeing will be discussed, followed by an introduction to working with clients who are navigating fertility treatment or third party reproduction. The types of perinatal loss and the impact of these losses on individuals and couples will be presented, and effective therapeutic approaches and interventions following perinatal loss will be shared. Descriptions of perinatal mood disorders will be discussed, including unique signs and symptoms to be aware of, suggestions for prevention and treatment, and resources for both the clinician and clients. The emotional and mental health of fathers will be covered in this section, including the positive impact of father involvement on child and maternal outcomes and barriers to father involvement. Common dynamics that arise as couples move from partners to parents will be presented, including treatment strategies to help your clients successfully navigate the early postpartum period. Considerations for the impact on siblings of growing the family and preparation of siblings for that transition will be examined.
