Community Institute for Psychotherapy (CIP) is a nonprofit, tax-exempt center founded in 1977 to provide quality, affordable mental health services to Marin individuals and families so that they may reestablish mental and emotional wellbeing and live satisfying and productive lives. CIP offers short and longterm outpatient psychotherapy on a sliding scale fee basis to adults, children, families, and couples who would otherwise be unable to afford such services.
CIP’s full range of services meet a variety of needs. Our work is accomplished in cooperation and coordination with a wide variety of public and private agencies and professionals throughout Marin County. Among Marin agencies providing long and short-term psychotherapy, CIP’s outstanding cost-effectiveness enables us to keep fees low and quality high. This benefits the community because healthy individuals and families make our whole community stronger and safer for all.
Understanding that mental health is the foundation for wellbeing, CIP focuses on providing maximum access to care for vulnerable populations, especially young families and school-age children. Our onsite outreach programs include Help for Disadvantaged Families & Individuals at Risk, Support for Survivors of Childhood Abuse, Adult Therapy Groups, Support for Separated and Divorcing Families, Support for Single Parent Families and Psychological Testing.
We serve clients from throughout Marin, including the communities of East San Rafael, West Marin, Marin City, and Novato. Outreach is conducted through a number of community agencies, such as Marin Community Clinic, Homeward Bound, Helen Vine Detox, among others. CIP collaborates with Marin public schools and other nonprofit organizations to provide counseling at their facilities.
Client services are provided by 20 to 24 qualified intern-therapists enrolled in postgraduate programs throughout the Bay Area and selected through a competitive process. Training and supervision are provided by more than 100 licensed mental health professionals who volunteer their time and expertise, a total of 350 hours of training and 4,240 hours of individual and group supervision, an in-kind contribution in excess of $400,000. Reliance on donated professional services assures the best client care at the lowest agency cost.
CIP is known throughout the Bay Area for its clinical excellence. The agency has been selected by Community Mental Health as a quality service provider, and approved by Partnership Health Plan/Beacon to provide services under the Affordable Care Act. The agency is an approved CAPIC (California Psychological Internship Council) site, and is a member of the Marin Council of Agencies, NAMI Marin (the National Alliance on Mental Illness), the Marin Continuum of Housing, and a founding member of the Marin Mental Health Alliance.
