Our second annual Loving Spoonfuls: Marin's Soup and Dessert Challenge, a benefit for Community Institute for Psychotherapy held Saturday at the Mill Valley Community Center, featured 30 fabulous entries from 17 challengers, including 14 of Marin's finest restaurants. In addition to invited professionals, event sponsors Bank of Marin and Brayton Purcell, LLP, also participated.

All entries were judged in two simultaneous competitions: The People's Choice Awards and The Judges' Awards, selected by culinary professionals. The winners were:

JUDGES' AWARDS

PEOPLE'S CHOICE AWARDS

  • Best Appetizer: Crimini Mushroom Caps stuffed with Red Wine Braised Short Ribs (Plate Shop)
  • Best Soup: Curried Butternut Squash Soup (Insalata's)
  • Best Dessert: Raspberry Red Velvet Cheesecake Cake (Brayton Purcell, LLP)

The fundraising event drew a bustling attendance (over 250) as foodies of all ages came to sample and vote for their favorites. Each was given three tickets by which to cast their ballots. Earlier in the day, culinary professionals Anna Haight, Marin IJ "Bread & Butter" Columnist; Leslie Harlib, well-known restaurant review critic; and Brigette Moran, Executive Director of the Marin Farmers Market, had made their selections on the basis of each the recipe's presentation, composition, and correct preparation.

"We love presenting our Loving Spoonfuls Challenge to the community," said Dr. Robin Berenson, Executive and Clinical Director of CIP. "It's such a fun, family-friendly, and nourishing event that embraces a community spirit, right in line with our services for families, adults and children. All the proceeds will go directly to support our sliding scale mental health services throughout the year.

"We are very grateful to the wonderfully generous restaurants, event sponsors, and everyone who helped to make our 2012 event successful."
