In an effort to raise public awareness about depression and other mental health issues, Community Institute for Psychotherapy will offer free confidential screenings and mental health assessments throughout the month of October. Additional sessions are available on a sliding scale. Founded in 1977, CIP is located in downtown San Rafael at 1330 Lincoln Avenue. Those wishing a free appointment can phone (415) 459-5999 ext. 102 for more information.
Why is awareness of mental health issues important? CIP Executive Director Dr. Robin Berenson explains, “Mental health is the foundation of who we are, our well-being, and our ability to live full and rewarding lives.” It is estimated that as many as 14 million American adults, about one in six, have an episode of major depression each year. Yet many do not even realize it, and many more do not seek treatment.
Fortunately, depression is among the many mental health conditions including anxiety, that are highly treatable, and affordable help is widely available. The first step is learning the symptoms and knowing if you’re at risk. For more information, visit www.cipmarin.org, under “Education and Prevention.”
Community Institute for Psychotherapy provides quality psychotherapy and counseling on a sliding scale, annually delivering more than 7,000 hours of therapy to more than 750 families, individuals, and couples. Programs include Help for Families and Individuals, Couples Therapy, Eating Disorders Prevention and Treatment, Support for Single Parents, Adult Therapy Groups, and Psychological Testing. Recognizing that the best way to maximize community well being is to invest in prevention and early treatment, CIP seeks to raise public awareness through community outreach and education, and professional development classes, study groups, and conferences.
