August CIP New & Notes – Parents’ Back to School Tips

A child seldom needs a good talking to as much as a good listening to.  ~Robert Brault

Welcome!

The start of a new school year is an eagerly anticipated and exciting time for children and parents alike. It can also be an especially stressful time, when children may need an extra measure of patience, reassurance, and support.

In this issue of CIP News & Notes, we offer a checklist of behaviors that may arise with the return to school and/or other periods of transition. Often, these are nothing to worry about, but it’s always a good idea to check with your child’s pediatrician, school teacher, or other professional about any questions or concerns.

I hope to hear from you, with questions and comments. Contact: Robin Joy Berenson, PhD, MFT, Executive and Clinical Director, at 415-459-5999 x100 or email: rjberensoncip@aol.com.

We worry about what a child will become tomorrow, yet we forget that he is someone today.

A Checklist for Health: Your School-age Child

A child’s behavior can give parents valuable information about his or her emotional state and ability to cope with the everyday stresses of childhood. Often they are temporary and represent signs of normal growth. However, if they persist or cause you concern, don’t hesitate to consult a professional. Remember that early attention can often prevent or resolve problems more easily.

* temper tantrums, fears, worries, panic
* lying, over-sensitivity, jealousy, overly competitive
* nightmares, nail biting, bed wetting
* over-eating, poor appetite, thumb sucking, grinding teeth
* overly aggressive, destructiveness, violence
* inappropriate expression of anger, impatience
* speech problems, poor communication skills
* unhappiness, anxiety, depression
* withdrawal, isolation, inattention
* feels disliked by teacher, peers
* low self-esteem, negative self talk (“I can’t do it”)
* school behavior, performance needs improvement
* disrespect, problematic family relations/childcare situation
* a recent or unresolved loss, hyperactivity, excessive crying
* excessive craving for sweets, excessive TV watching
