Summer Time is Family Time

Summer Time is Family Time…

You don’t choose your family.
They are God’s gift to you,
as you are to them.

~ Desmond Tutu

During summer months when children are out of school, many families enjoy spending more time together in a relaxed way.  This is a good time to nourish family relationships and reconsider habits and routines that no longer work or that may not offer your child what he or she needs at this time of development.

Here are some simple parenting tips that will enhance your time together, help children grow into confident, responsible individuals, and contribute to a positive, healthy family environment.

Remember, Parents, to . . .

  • talk with your child.
  • have fun with your child.
  • keep communication open with regular family meetings.
  • decide on reasonable, clear rules and enforce them consistently.
  • see that your child gets adequate sleep every night.
  • make sure your child begins the day with a nutritious breakfast.
  • discipline with love.
  • shelter youngsters from undue concern.
  • avoid alcohol and drug abuse in the home.
  • guard against unrealistic expectations of your child.
  • don’t nag, yell, threaten, or bribe.
  • teach your child to value himself/herself.
